SEMI report: Global silicon wafer shipments will increase by 10 year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025
On July 29, 2025, California time, the Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG), a subsidiary of SEMI, released its quarterly silicon wafer industry analysis report, projecting global silicon wafer shipments to reach 3,327 million square inches (MSI) in the second quarter of 2025, a 9.6% increase from 3,035 million square inches in the same period of 2024. This represents a 14.9% quarter-over-quarter increase from the 2,896 million square inches in the first quarter of this year, indicating signs of recovery in some sectors beyond memory.
“Demand for silicon wafers used in AI data center chips, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), remains very strong,” said Chongwei Li, chairman of SEMI SMG and vice president of GlobalWafers. “Fab capacity utilization for other devices remains low overall, but inventory levels are normalizing. While shipment trends show positive momentum, the impact of geopolitical and supply chain dynamics on the future remains uncertain.”
